Phytochemical screening, antioxidants and antimicrobial potential of Lantana camara in different solvents

چکیده
Resistance to antimicrobial agents is a major global public health problem[1]. Infectious diseases account for approximately one-half of all death in tropics. Despite the progress made in the understanding of microorganisms and their control in industrialized nations, incidents due to drug resistant microorganisms and the emergence of unknown disease causing microbes, posed enormous public health concern[2]. Streptococcus pyogenes, Stephylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, the organisms that causes respiratory and cutaneous infection, as well as Pseudomonas and members of Enterobacteriaceae, causing diarrhea and urinary tract infections and sepsis, are now resistant to virtually all of the known antibiotics[3]. This resistance is largely due to indiscriminate use of antimicrobial drugs commonly used for the treatment of infectious diseases[4]. Furthermore some antibiotics have serious undesirable side effect which limit their application, so there is serious need to develop new antimicrobial agents that are very effective with minimal unwanted side effect. Plants represent a potential source of novel antibiotic prototypes[5]. Lantana camara (L. camara) is mainly used as a herbal medicine and in some areas as firewood and mulch[6]. It is also used for the treatment of cancers, chicken pox, measles, asthma, ulcers, swellings, eczema, tumors, high PEER REVIEW ABSTRACT

Variation in antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in Lantana camara L. flowers in relation to extraction methods.
BACKGROUND The present work was designed to appraise how different extraction solvents and techniques affect the extractability of antioxidant and antimicrobial components from Lantana camara (L. camard) flowers. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four extraction solvents including 100% methanol, 80% methanol, 100% ethanol and 80% ethanol coupled with three extraction techniques namely stirring, microwave-...

Background: The study was conducted to determine the antimicrobial activity of varying concentrations of Lantana camara Linn. leaf extracts against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. Methods: Broth microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was evaluated through streaking of bacte...

The aim of the present study was to investigate the antimicrobial and preliminary phytochemical properties of Lantana indica Roxb. The aqueous and organic solvent (ethyl acetate and methanol) extracts from the leaves of Lantana indica (Verbenaceae) were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Steptococcus pyrogens, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseu...
متن کاملPhytochemical analysis and modulation in aminoglycosides antibiotics activity by Lantana camara L
Several plants have been evaluated not only for alone antimicrobial activity, but as resistance-modifying agent. This work is the first on the modulation of antibiotic activity by Lantana camara L. extracts against multiresistant strains of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial activities of leaf and root ethanol extracts alone or in association with aminoglycosides were...

The aim of this study was to evaluate quantitatively the antimicrobial and antioxidant potentials of the leaves extracts of Guava (Psidium guajava Linn.),belonging to the Myrtaceae family. The plant samples were collected from Tajoura eastern part of Tripoli in Libya. Methanol and water were used as solvents in the extraction. The phytochemical screening showed that the ethanolic and aqueous ex...
